United Way of East Central Alabama kicks off its 2007 campaign

Posted August 22, 2007

Over 300 people attended the 2007/2008 United Way Campaign Kick-off Luncheon on Tuesday at the Anniston City Meeting Center. Chris Shinstock of Alabama Power who is serving as the 2007 United Way Campaign Chairman announced that, even before the campaign had officially kicked off, approximately $140,000 had already been pledged from the generous residents of the local area. Last year $1,472,000 was pledged and has been making a huge difference in the lives of local residents. Shinstock has set an aggressive goal for 2007 of $1,750,000. As Shinstock explains, .Our local Board Members realize this is an aggressive goal which represents a 20% increase over last year.s pledges. However, we arrived at this amount by looking at the minimum needs of our partner agencies. These organizations are on the front lines each day reaching out to make our community a better place to live and we owe it to them and our local residents to achieve the greatest success possible.. Donors and volunteers were praised for their proven generosity and the money donated will be used in Calhoun, Cleburne and Randolph Counties. The money raised in each county is used in that county to focus on United Way.s Community Impact areas.Helping Kids Succeed; Strengthening Families & Communities; Assisting in Times of Crisis or Disaster; Promoting Health & Independence.

The guest speaker for the event was Nell Fortner, Head Coach of The Auburn Ladies Basketball Team who encouraged those in attendance to give to United Way. Coach Fortner has achieved great success in her career including 22 years that includes being USA Basketball.s Senior Women.s National Team Coach from 1997 to 2000. She also coached the team to the World Championship in 1998 and led the team to a Gold Medal in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She has also been an ESPN and CBS analyst for women.s basketball since 2001. The activities concluded with Shinstock explaining the friendly football competition for this year.s campaign which will include Alabama, Auburn and JSU fans showing their community support by giving to United Way. JSU cheerleaders were there to help cheer those in attendance on to victory and one of the highlights were taped messages from Coach Crowe of JSU, Coach Kines of Alabama and Coach Tuberville of Auburn telling their fans to help make sure this year.s campaign is a success.

Day of Caring a huge success for our community

Posted June 18, 2007

Day of Caring has definitely became a tradition in our community. Volunteers come back each year to lend a hand and new faces show up to experience the event that they have heard their co-workers talk so much about. Each year, United Way of East Central Alabama matches more than 350 volunteers with local non-profit agencies to help with improvement projects throughout our community. On Friday, June 22, 2007, participants will gather once again at AmStar Cinemas located inside the Quintard Mall for the Day of Caring Kick-off Breakfast. Volunteer teams will then move to their assigned worksites. The results will be over 1,200 volunteer hours focused on enhancing our local agencies and improving our community.

Don't forget! There are 364 more days in the year besides Day of Caring. If you would like to volunteer with United Way or other non-profit agencies in our community, please e-mail us at uweca@bellsouth.net.
